New Board members elected

The Council of the European Forest Institute has re-elected Prof.Dr. José Antonio Bonet (Spain) and Dr. Harald Mauser (Austria) to EFI Board for the period 2011-2014. In addition, the Council elected two new members to the Board: Giuseppe Scarascia-Mugnozza (Italy) and Lisa Sennerby Forsse (Sweden). The Council, Board and the EFI Secretariat warmly thank previous Board members, Liisa Saarenmaa (Finland) and Miroslav Benko (Croatia) for their invaluable contribution to EFI activities during the past years.

Fourteen EFI member countries were represented at the EFI Council on 22 June in Zagreb, Croatia.

Marc Palahí appointed as Assistant Director in Policy Advice

Dr. Marc Palahí has been appointed as acting Assistant Director in Policy Advice in EFI. Dr. Palahí will start his initial two-year term on 1 July. His post-station is in the EFI policy advice office to be established this summer in Barcelona. In this new post in the EFI, he will be responsible for coordinating policy advice activities throughout the institute, help establishing the policy advice office in Barcelona and establishing and starting new policy advice activities and funding. He also continues his work as Head of EFI’s Mediterranean Regional Office, EFIMED.

EFI contribution in the Ministerial Summit on forests in Europe

At the FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe in Oslo, Norway on 14-16 June 2011, the ministers responsible for forests took far-reaching high-level policy decisions concerning the continent’s forests. EFI coordinated the Scientific Community Group Statement which was presented by EFI Director Risto Päivinen to the Ministerial Conference.

EFI part of the Secretariat for negotiation process on Legally Binding Agreement

The Oslo Ministerial Conference has decided to launch a negotiating process towards a Legally Binding Agreement (LBA) of European forests. EFI’s role will be providing independent scientific and policy advice in support of negotiations as well as inputs to information needs identified by the Committee.

The State of Europe’s Forests 2011 report was launched last week in Oslo.The overall aim of the presented report is to provide decision makers and the broad public with up-to-date, comprehensive and fact-based information on the status and trends in forests and sustainable forest management in Europe in the period 1990-2010.
