EFI at the XIII World Forestry Congress

The World Forestry Congress takes place in on 18-23 October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. EFI is involved in the following side-events:

A Side event on ‘Addressing forest governance and timber trade: the EU FLEGT initiative’ will be held during the World Forestry Congress on 20th October 2009, at 12.45-14.15, at the Blue Pavilion, Room Pehuén. The event will be jointly organized by European Forest Institute (EU FLEGT Facility), European Commission and FAO.The organizers will present a panel composed of representatives from partner countries and European experts to share their experiences with the FLEGT Action Plan and FLEGT VPAs. Discussion will include direct and indirect impacts of the FLEGT processes at national levels, changing EU market requirements and potential synergies with REDD related activities. The event will be of particular interest to those wishing to learn more about the EC FLEGT initiative. Languages: English. Interpretation in French and in Spanish will be available. A side event on 'Forests and water - the challenge of cross-sectorial cooperation' will be held on  21 October (12.45-14.15h) and is organised by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and co-organized by: REDLACH (Latin American Technical Cooperation Network on Watershed Management), MCPFE (Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forests in Europe), EFIMED (Mediterranean Regional Office of the European Forest Institute), Austrian Government, Turkish Government, UNU (United Nations University). Presentation languages are English and Spanish.

A side event on 'Arid zone forests' contributions to biodiversity conservation, combating desertification and sustainable livelihoods: The Global Challenge in a Changing World'; will be held on 22 October (18: 30 - 20:30) and is organized by FAO in collaboration with the African Union Commission, The Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI)/Senegal, NGARA (Network of Gum Arabic and Resins), IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Centre, Mediterranean Regional O¬ce of the European Forest Institute (EFIMED), UNEP-WCMC, CBD Secretariat, the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD and GTZ.

Also, Project Coordinator of FOPER II project, Prof.Dr. Margaret Shannon, will be giving a keynote presentation at the session 6.5 'Intersectoral policies and influences'.
