Negotiations on Legally Binding Agreement started

The Oslo Ministerial Conference in June decided to launch a negotiating process towards a Legally Binding Agreement (LBA) of European forests. It also decided to establish a Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) and the Bureau for this Committee and invited EFI, together with UNECE, FAO, UNEP and the Forest Europe Liaison Unit to form jointly the Secretariat to service the negotiating process. The first Bureau meeting of the INC was hosted by EFI on 5-6 September 2011. The chairman of the Bureau is Mr. Jan Heino from Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Finland.

High-level policy makers discuss information-sharing forum

Dr. Marc Palahí, Assistant Director of Policy Advice, briefed high-level policy makers on EFI’s plans for a “Think Tank” for Future Forests in Europe at a two-day event, European and Global Forests – Which Way for the Future? at the European Parliament on 7 September. His presentation, “Think Tank” for Future Forests in Europe: a high-level forum for science-policy discussions, was part of a round-table discussion on the role research, knowledge-base and information-sharing can play in the sustainable use of forests.

Are sustainability indicators appropriate for planted forests?

EFI’s new Discussion Paper, Are MCPFE Indicators Suitable for Planted Forests?, analyses the value of indicators for assessing sustainable forest management in the context of cultivated forests. It shows the diversity of indicators, the weaknesses of existing ones, and the benefits of new indicators tested during the FORSEE project. The paper also demonstrates the variability in the quality of indicators, and the limits of their comparability.
