The Annual Conference moves towards more dialogue

This year’s Annual Conference brought forth the latest developments in EFI to the Associate and Affiliate Members in Uppsala, Sweden. It also highlighted the need for even more dialogue between EFI and its member organizations. Next year in Turkey we expect to have more sessions dedicated to dialogue and facilitated discussions. The afternoon seminar focused on the Europe 2020 Strategy and the role of forests in it.

Former Swedish Prime Minister to chair high-level discussion forum on forests

Göran Persson, Swedish Prime Minister from 1996-2006, will chair an international high-level discussion forum on forests coordinated by the European Forest Institute. In his speech at EFI 2011 Annual Conference, Mr Persson urged the sharing of the European forest science community’s knowledge with decision makers such as the European Parliament and the European Council. “I look forward to co-operation with this group of distinguished scientists and European structures that I am familiar with”, he stated. “The new discussion forum will offer the Parliament a good forum on research and development and forestry.” He also emphasized the role of the forest sector in actively contributing to finding solutions to tackle and adapt to climate change.

Photo competition winner announced!

Mr. Igor Kolar from the Croatian Forest Research Institute has been chosen as the winner of EFI’s Our Forests photo competition. His winning photo, “Crataegus oxyacantha in embrace of morning dew”, was unveiled at EFI’s Annual Conference in Uppsala, Sweden on 28 September.

2nd RoK-FOR Conference: Forest Biomass for Renewable Energy: Building Regional Cooperation and Clusters for New Opportunities.
Zagreb, Croatia 26-28 October 2011.
The conference will present the highlights of the Joint Action Plan for interregional cooperation developed within the RoK-FOR project and aims to serve as an open platform for planning joint activities. Keynote speakers include i.a. Mr Lucas Janssen from European Commission, Ms. Sandra Hižak from Wood Cluster of Northwestern Croatia, Mr. Stéphane Latour from Xylofutur Pole of Competitiveness and Mr. Dušan Jović from the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry and Water management.
