Dr. Marc Palahí appointed as the new Director of EFI

Dr. Marc Palahí has been appointed as the new Director of EFI. The new Director will start his 5- year term on 1 January 2015. The decision was made by the EFI Board and the EFI Council gave its assent to the appointment. The Director is based at the EFI Headquarters in Joensuu, Finland.

“Marc Palahí is a visionary leader and he has an impressive track record in developing networks and joint initiatives, as well as in fundraising and leading research and policy support in an international context,” states Chairman of the EFI Board, J. Bo Larsen.

Participate in the BioEconomy Dialogue!

The Barcelona BioEconomy Forum will take place on 27–29 November 2014. The organising committee invites leading scientific, civil society and public institutions to host focussed meetings in the weeks leading up to the Forum. This collaboration should serve to contribute knowledge and proposals to the Forum, bring strategic actors to the table, and create new opportunities for the dissemination of Forum results among a wider public.

StarTree featured on euronews

StarTree -project is featured this week on euronews channel in their science and technology series Futuris.

In August 2014, euronews senior producer Denis Loctier visited Joensuu and interviewed StarTree partners and stakeholders. As a result, a four-minute news item is being featured on euronews. You can watch it here. Be sure also to watch a shorter piece on Who owns mushrooms in a forest.

StarTree aims to show how multi-purpose trees and non-wood forest products can be used to strengthen and diversify economic activities in rural areas. The project brings together key research organisations and specialised small and medium sized enterprises throughout Europe. XXIV IUFRO World Congress 2014

Forests and trees are key components of responses to a growing number of problems society is facing today such as the need for renewable resources, climate change, water scarcity, and poverty. The 24 th IUFRO World Congress " Sustaining Forests, Sustaining People: the Role of Research" aims at showcasing the scientific expertise and activities in current forest research to address the range of sustainability challenges and opportunities. The Conference is the largest global scientific conference on forests with an expected number of more than 3,500 participants from all over the world. It will be held from 5-11 October in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
