Prime Minister of Finland visited EFI HQ!

Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister of Finland visited EFI Headquarters yesterday. During the visit, the Prime Minister and Interim Director Marc Palahí discussed the role of European forests as a basis for green growth. They also talked about EFI’s role in the context of accelerated changes and global challenges, and how EFI can put science into action for more coordinated research and for supporting policy making.

New publication on the future of the European forest-based sector

The forest-based sector is undergoing many profound structural changes. The newly published study on the future of the European forest-based sector provides analysis and insights on changes in the operating environment and its implications to forest-based sector. The focus is on the outlook of the current forest products (pulp and paper, wood products), new forest products (already in production or on the horizon), bioenergy, forest services (mainly related to forest products), and regional implications in central, northern, and southern Europe.

On 1 January 2015, the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) will disappear as an independent institute. It will instead be merged with three other institutes to form Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

Charlotte Bengtsson, currently head of SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, will take over as executive director of the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden (Skogforsk) in January 2015. She is replacing Jan Fryk who will retire.

Wageningen UR collaborates closely with PBL in the The Nature Outlook project. The final results will be published during the Dutch presidency of the Council of the EU in early 2016.
