Assistant Director for EFI appointed!

Dr.Ir. Gert-Jan Nabuurs has been appointed Assistant Director of the European Forest Institute (EFI). Dr. Nabuurs will start his three-year term, with a possibility of extension, on 1 June 2009.

Dr. Nabuurs (41) has a PhD in forest planning and economics and a Msc. in Forestry and Soil Sciences. He has previously worked as Teamleader of Forest Ecosystems Team and as a Senior researcher on European Forest Scenario Studies at the Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands. He also holds the positions of Associate Researcher at the European Forest Institute, and of Adjunct Professor at the University of Joensuu, Finland.

EFIATLANTIC launch on 23 February!

On 23 February the EFI Regional Office EFIATLANTIC will be launched in Bordeaux, France. The programme includes presentations on the issues and challenges of the forest sector in the Atlantic region, as well as information on the EFIATLANTIC Regional Office – its organisation, mission and work plans. EFIATLANTIC is the third EFI Regional Office to start its activities. It is based in Bordeaux, France, and it will concentrate its activities in Portugal, Atlantic Spain, Atlantic France, Ireland and United Kingdom. The general theme of EFIATLANTIC is the sustainable management and competitive utilisation of planted forest resources.

International workshop: Forest policy and economics in support of good governance

Registration to an international workshop on forest policy and economics in support of good governance to be held on 3–4 April 2009, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, is now open. The workshop aims to present recent developments and contributions of forest policy and economics research in support of good governance in forest sector of Europe and to map the linkages between capacity building and good governance. The organisers of the workshop are the European Forest Institute, in the framework of the FOPER-project, and the Forest Research Institute Jastrebarsko, Croatia.

Changes in contact persons in the DG Agriculture of the European Commission

Two new forest officers have started in the DG Agriculture in January 2009:

Piotr Borkowski, former head of MCPFE Liaison Unit, has replaced Marius Lazdinis, who has moved to the Accession Unit of DG Agri. Piotr Borkowski will coordinate the work of the Standing Forestry Committee and the Commission's representation in the MCPFE.

Andreas Gumbert will be responsible for Climate Change in Forestry and Agriculture. Ignacio Seoane has started in the Evaluation Unit of DG Agriculture, responsible for instance for the Mid-Term evaluation of the Forest Action Plan.

Mediterranean Forest Research Agenda – MFRA

EFI Mediterranean Regional Office, EFIMED, has taken the lead in drafting a Mediterranean Forest Research Agenda (MFRA) that describes the main research priorities for forestry in the region in the period 2009–2020. The European Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform (FTP) has provided the framework for the Mediterranean forest research community to develop the MFRA as part of the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) in order to highlight the main Pan-Mediterranean scientific challenges, as well as the scientific priorities, objectives and outcomes to address them.
