The latest issue of EFI News concentrates on the EFI 20 Years Science and Policy Forum which gathered EFI member organisations and other key partners to Nancy, France to discuss the future of our forests. Other articles address Pan-European Criteria and Indicators, planned US-EU trade agreement and other interesting topics.

Forest-based sectors in the EU and Russia need each other

We need an effective collaborative framework between the EU countries and Russia to make the Pan-European region the leading actor in bio-economy. This was concluded by the recent ThinkForest seminar on emerging opportunities for EU-Russia cooperation on forest-based sector governance. The event presented the current environment of the forest-based sectors in the EU and Russia. It also brought up insights on future forest sector scenarios including business opportunities and policy related challenges. On this basis, the participants agreed that Russia and the EU countries need each other in developing their forest sectors further.

Senior Expert in Russian Forest Sector Markets and Policy appointed

Dr. Elena Kulikova has been appointed as a Senior Expert in Russian Forest Sector Markets and Policy for the Foresight and Policy Support Programme. She will start her service at EFI in February 2014, and will be based at the EFI Headquarters in Joensuu, Finland.

Sustainable, innovative forest use for Europe

Europe has more than 117 million hectares of forest, but the sustainable utilisation especially in privately owned woods falls short of its potential. The ever-increasing demand for wood for material and energy applications is becoming more and more difficult to meet. In response, the EU project SIMWOOD (Sustainable Innovative Mobilisation of Wood) was recently launched with the aim of promoting a more efficient use of the available supply of wood and bolster Europe's forestry and wood industry. The EU is funding the project with about EUR 6 million over a four-year period. The Coordinator is Roland Schreiber from Bayerische Landesanstalt für Wald und Forstwirtschaft.

Forests in northern Europe in the light of new climate scenarios

Researchers from several research institutes in northern Europe were gathered at a workshop in Uppsala in middle of November. The focus of this event was to discuss different aspects of climate change on forestry in northern Europe and inform each other about on-going scientific projects and initiate collaboration.
