New Head of Forest Resources and Information appointed at EFI

Dr. Tuula Nuutinen has been appointed Head of Research Programme ‘Forest Resources and Information’ at the European Forest Institute. She will start her five-year term in the beginning of August.Dr. Nuutinen holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Geography, University of Edinburgh and a M.Sc. and Lic.Sc. (For.) from the University of Joensuu. She is currently working as a Professor in Forest Planning and Director of Research and Development Programme on Forest Resource Information Systems and Forest Planning at the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla).

EFI Central European Regional Office – EFICENT – builds new synergies in forest research

EFI’s regional presence was tangible at the information event of the newly established Central European Regional Office, EFICENT, held last Friday in Freiburg, Germany. Nearly 50 participants from eight countries gathered to learn about and discuss the activities of this new EFI Regional Office, which aims to increase national and trans-boundary research collaboration of forest research institutions in Central Europe. EFICENT has been initiated by Germany, France and Switzerland, but the door is very much open to any organisations or countries in the Central European region and beyond.

Manager of the European Forest Observatory of EFICENT appointed

Dr. Aljoscha Requardt has been appointed Manager of the European Forest Observatory. The European Forest Observatory is an integral part of EFI’s Central European Regional Office, EFICENT.

Dr. Requardt will take up his three-year contract with the possibility of renewal on 1 July. He is moving to his new position from the Institute for World Forestry, University of Hamburg (UHH), Germany, where he has been working as a Scientist and Deputy Head of the institute research unit “International Forest Development and Forest Policy” since 2006. Dr. Requardt has a a PhD from the University of Hamburg and a MSc from the Dresden University of Technology.

The European Forest Observatory of EFICENT is located in Nancy, France, and its activities are closely coordinated with EFI’s Research Programmes, particularly that of Forest Resources and Information.

Joint partnering event for FP7 projects in Vienna, May 15

The FTP, in collaboration with its Austrian National Support Group, EFI, EFPRO and Innovawood, will organise a so-called joint partnering event for development of projects under the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme for research and development (FP7). The event will be held in Vienna, Austria, on Friday May 15, 2009 (10.00-16.00 hrs).
