Forest Bioenergy discussed in ThinkForest

The latest ThinkForest event on 18 March gathered over 60 policy makers and stakeholders to the European Parliament to hear new insights on forest bioenergy. In the event, a new ThinkForest brief “Forest Bioenergy in Europe: Reassessment needed” by Lauri Hetemäki, Bart Muys, Paavo Pelkonen and Davide Pettenella was launched. The brief points out that renewed assessments and policies as well as better policy coordination are needed.

Bilbao receives European Forest City award

EFI’s Director Risto Päivinen presented José Luis Sabas, Deputy Mayor of Bilbao with a certificate and wooden plaque on 20 March, to mark Bilbao’s nomination as European Forest City 2014. Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque Country, Spain. The region has one of the highest percentages of forest area in Europe, and a long and varied tradition of using forest resources. EFI grants the title of European Forest City each year, to the city which hosts its Annual Conference. The 2014 Annual Conference will be held in Bilbao from 10-12 September.

Building cooperation and collaboration between Russia and European countries

Twenty experts, scientists and policy makers from Russian and Mediterranean regions met in Barcelona on 20-21 March to discuss strategies and management approaches to address the increasing risk of forest fires. Discussions centred around fire prevention and fire suppression as well as forest management, economics and forest policy considerations. It was discovered that Russia and European countries have a common understanding of the causes and drivers of fire risk, and synergies and similarities in addressing forest fires. They share a joint common language of fire fighting and possibilities for future cooperation.

The European project SIMWOOD – Sustainable Innovative Mobilisation of Wood has officially launched its website. Visitors to www.simwood-project.eu will be able to read the latest information about the project’s activities, and its work to mobilise untapped reserves of timber in Europe. The project has also launched its social media presence on Twitter and LinkedIn.
