Mediterranean Forestry Week
The first Mediterranean Forest Week was successfully held in Antalya from 14th to 16th April. EFIMED, FAO, SILVA Mediterranea and AIFM joined their expertise and networks, with the valuable support of SAFRI, providing an unprecedented platform for policy-makers, scientists and other stakeholders. The Week encouraged lively discussions regarding emerging
Pan-Mediterranean forestry challenges as well as on joint initiatives
and projects to address them in a efficient manner. More than 130 participants took part in the different seminars and workshops.
One of the most important outcomes of the First Mediterranean Forest Week is the position paper “Contribution of forests and other wooded lands to food security in the Mediterranean”, initiative leadered by Silva Mediterranea, FAO and AIFM. It will be submitted for endorsement to the forthcoming session of the FAO European Forestry Commission for onward submission to the Ministers of Agriculture for adoption at the next Ministerial Conference of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
It was highlighted that ensuring the future of Mediterranean forests requires both, sound science-based information and a fluent, transparent and interactive science-policy dialogue. The Mediterranean Forest Week offered a unique opportunity towards a strong integration of all international initiatives dealing with Mediterranean forests as well as a unique voice expressing the importance and needs of such valuable ecosystems.
During the closing of the First Mediterranean Forest Week it was confirmed that the Second Mediterranean Forest Week will be jointly organised in Avignon (France) by INRA, Ministry of Agriculture of France, EFIMED, FAO, Silva Mediterranea, AIFM, ARCMED and the Mediterranean Forest Model Network.
