Host Country Agreement signed between Spain and EFI

The agreement was signed on July 28th by Dr. Cristina Garmendia Mendizabal, Minister for Science and Innovation of Spain and Dr. Risto Päivinen, Director of EFI.

Marc Palahí appointed as Assistant Director in Policy Advice

Dr. Marc Palahí has been appointed as acting Assistant Director in Policy Advice in EFI for the coming two years, with post-station in the EFI policy advice office in Barcelona. In this new post in the EFI, he is responsible for coordinating policy advice activities throughout the institute, helps in the policy advice office establishment and establises and starts new policy advice activities and funding. He also continues his work as Head of EFI’s Mediterranean Regional Office, EFIMED.

Dendrochronology provides insights in growth limiting factors

Kiato_lab work_160x103.jpg : 4.6796875KbFrom 12th to 20th July 16 researchers in dendrochronology met in Kiato (Greece) to better understand historical phenomena that limit tree growth, which are crucial in view of the climate change predictions for the Mediterranean area.

This international Summer School was organized by the University of Arizona, the University of Western Greece, the University of Patras and the University of Athens. EFIMED has supported the participation of 7 participants of North Africa and Near East countries in this course.

Water and forests book presented to the European Commission

Last July 1st EFIMED presented the book "Water for forests and people in the Mediterranean: a challenging balance" at DG Environment (European Commission).

Mr. Yves Birot and Mr. Marc Palahí were invited to present the main messages that Science can Tell to policy makers regarding the issue of water and forests interactions. Interesting debate developed after the presentation and participants from DG ENV and DG AGRI finally proposed that the book should be further presented during one of the next meetings of the Standing Forestry Committee.

EFIMED present in the UNECE/FAO workshop and TEEB Conference in Tunisia

Mr. Robert Mavsar has recently participated in two important international fora: the TEEB conference in Tunis and the UNECE/FAO workshop on Payments for Environmental Services with the session on Water and drylands.

Discussing about the future of forests in the Mediterranean

Mr. Robert Mavsar and Mr. Marc Palahí were invited lecturers at the summer course "Future forests. Challenges of Mediterranean forests facing climate change" (Els boscos del futur. Reptes dels boscos mediterranis davant del canvi climàtic), organised in Barcelona (Spain) by the prestigious International University Menéndez Pelayo. Mr. Palahí introduced the scientific and political challenges for adaptation of Mediterranean forests to climate change. Mr. Mavsar explained the importance and the economic valuation of forest products without market in the Mediterranean.
