SylvaMED project: a gear of society, governments and landowners
SylvaMED is an international project under the MED Programme of the European Commission, coordinated by the Forest Technology Center of Catalonia (CTFC) and involving six partners from different Mediterranean countries: Slovenia, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (France), Reggio Liguria (Italy), Crete (Greece), Catalonia (Spain) and the Languedoc-Roussillon (France). In addition, the European Forest Institute (through its Mediterranean Regional Office-EFIMED) and the International Forest Owners Association for the Mediterranean region -ARCMED- will provide Pan-Mediterranean information from the scientific community and the forest owners.
The SylvaMED project, which will last until 2013, aims at improving the policy frameworks in view of compatibilising forest management in private and public lands with the provision of relevant environmental services to society.
This project constitutes an attempt to respond to the challenge of the supply and financing of environmental services, considering their costs and benefits. Partners will work towards the testing of public-private schemes where users of forest goods and services will be engaged with the providers (public administrations or forest owners) of such services in order to ensure their sustainable provision. During the next project meetings, partners will present and jointly define the pilot actions through which they will gain experience in this type of mechanisms.
The role of EFIMED is to advise the design of Payments for Environmental Services and improving the communication among Mediterranean forest stakeholders.
The kick-off meeting in Marseille followed the regional seminar on “Forests and drinking water”, which included relevant international speakers.
SylvaMED project is part of the MED Programme, co-financed by the European Commission through the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).
