Mediterranean Model Forests host research projects
The Mediterranean Model Forest Network and EFIMED launched the grants supporting applied research in Model Forests. Five applications were received, being selected the proposals of Dr. Rafael Navarro and Dr. Jose Ramón Olabarría.
Dr. Rafael Navarro and his team at the University of Córdoba will carry out the project “The effect of climate and site quality on individual tree growth and stand dynamics of Cedrus atlantica Manetti in Ifrane, Morocco”. He will stay one month in the Middle Atlas inventorying certain plots and taking samples of tree rings for further analysis. His main objective is modelling the growth and yield of individual trees in view of allowing the development of more adjusted management strategies.
Dr. Jose Ramón Olabarría has worked on “Mapping fire risk in the Model Forest of Urbión based on airborne lidar measurements”. His main objective of the project has been the development of a methodology to model forest fuel based on Lidar images which permits the creation of fire risk maps at landscape level. He has spent one month in Urbión (Spain) implementing these tasks jointly with the local CESEFOR.
in the frame of the International year of forests, the Mediterranean Model Forest Network has produced a video on its objectives and procedures: English version, French version and Spanish version.
