IPA Adriatic model forest project mobilizes forestry capacities in SEE

The Croatian Forest Research Institute (CFRI) and its regional centre in Istria launched the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) Adriatic project “Adriatic model forest (AMF)”, at a conference which took place in Motovun, Croatia in December 2012.

The project’s main objective is the strengthening of local participation in the decision-making process and the sharing of experiences to SEE partners and their local processes. Participating in the AMF project are nine regional partners, from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Serbia.

The CFRI’s Centre for Forest Ecosystems, Goods and Services is the lead beneficiary in the Adriatic model forest project thanks to experiences and know-how gained in establishing the model forest “River Mirna basin” in the north Adriatic region of Istria, Croatia.

The process for establishing the model forest “River Mirna basin” began in 2009 with the European project “Forêt Modèle” under the MED Programme 2007-2013, and was implemented by the County of Istria in cooperation with CFRI. The first of its kind in the SEE region, the “River Mirna basin” model forest has proved to be a success story, and is now just a step away from being officially established.

The process will be coordinated by MMFN, CFRI and local partners, and will include five technical workshops in Dalmatia. Experiences will be shared and good practices disseminated in five international meetings to be held in Bosnia, Serbia, Albania, Greece and Italy. The AMF project’s first workshop took place on 26-27 February 2013 in Split, Croatia.
