EFIMED week 2012 – celebrating 5 years of research networking

EFIMED week 2012 took place in Tunis, Tunisia from 12 - 14 June.  147 participants from 17 countries attended the 3-day event which incorporated the AGORA Final Conference, EFIMED’s Annual Meeting and the EFIMED Scientific Seminar ‘Women Making a Difference: Women in science and innovation working towards sustainable natural resources management and governance in the Mediterranean region’.

AGORA Final Conference: strengthened partnerships for future collaboration

71 participants from 12 countries attended the AGORA Final Conference on 12 June in Tunis.  The conference opened EFIMED Week 2012 and marked the end of a 3-year project funded by the European Commission.

EFIMED Annual Meeting - Towards a Mediterranean forest research area

The EFIMED Annual Meeting, "Towards a Mediterranean forest research area" took place during EFIMED week in Tunis on 13th June.  Speakers from Australia and USA gave presentations on other Mediterranean climate areas and discussions  and workshops were held on strategic activities for the FORESTERRA project.

Women Making a Difference: lively debate and shared testimonies at EFIMED’s Scientific Seminar

93 participants from 16 countries attended the Seminar in Tunis on 14th June entitled “Women Making a Difference: Women in science and innovation working towards sustainable natural resources management in the Mediterranean region”.

Scientific Seminar Best Poster Award

The award for the best poster went to Climate change, perception of risks for women and a vision for better resistance: the experience of the SEARCH project”, by Farida Berrad from the Rif regional office in Morocco of the High Commission of Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification (HCEFLCD) and colleagues from Morocco and Spain.

One member of the team will enjoy a one-week visit to another Mediterranean institution to develop further the work presented.

Special mentions were given to: Ouahiba Meddour-Sahar for “The knowledge of Berber rural women using medicinal plants (Tizi Ouzou province, Algeria)”, ; Faten Mezni and colleagues from Tunisia for “The extraction of fixed lentisk oil: a new method used by women in forest zones”; and to Bahar Dinç-Durmaz and colleagues from Turkey for “The story of smoke hunters: women at watchtowers”.

New Appointments

Ms Sarah Adams started work with EFIMED on 1st June 2012 as EFIMED Communications and Project Officer. 

She will be based at the EFIMED office in Barcelona.
