Collaboration between Catalonia and Lebanon
The Government of Catalonia and the Ministry of Agriculture of Lebanon agreed to collaborate in the management of forest areas.
In the Memorandum of Cooperation, the institutions agreed to work on the development of the forestry sector and to design and develop the programme "40 million forest trees".
Josep Maria Pelegrí, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and Environment for the Catalan Government and Dr. Hussein Hajj Hassan, Minister of Agriculture of Lebanon signed an agreement with the aim of defining cooperation between the two institutions in the development and management of forest areas. They also agreed to work together in developing the Lebanese government’s programme “40 Million forest trees”. This is a national initiative launched by the Ministry of Agriculture of Lebanon to plant 40 million trees and restore forest lost during the last decade. The civil war, urban development, fire, intensive grazing and pests have drastically reduced forest cover resulting in deterioration of the environment by decreasing groundwater levels, increasing soil erosion and changes in microclimates .
The institutions agreed to collaborate on forest development policies, analysis, evaluation and development of non-wood forest products and services, payments for environmental services, combating desertification, conservation of biodiversity and the compatibility between biodiversity, agriculture, forests and grasslands, and on the impact of climate change and carbon markets.
Xavier Clopés, Deputy Director General of Forests of the Government of Catalonia, and David Solano, director of International Affairs at the Forests Sciences Centre of Catalonia will be the Coordination Committee in charge of carrying out these tasks.
EFIMED Network partners from the Lebanon, Chadi Mohanna and Patricia Sfeir, presented the 40 Million Trees project at the 2013 EFIMED Scientific Seminar on Managing the Mediterranean forest as a complex social-ecological system
