MOUNTFOR – Preserving and Enhancing the Multifunctionality of Mountain Forests

Coordinated by the Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) Via E. Mach, 1 38010 S. Michele all'Adige (TN), Italy

The Project Centre was established in January 2013.

EFI Project Centre MOUNTFOR aims to provide scientific basis for sustainable management of mountain forests and initiate expertise platforms for multiple stakeholders. It also aims to define priorities for research agendas in order to gather information on mountain forest catchments resistance and resilience to climate change and to harmonize strategies regarding mountain water resources and ecosystem services. MOUNTFOR will cooperate closely with both EFI Headquarters and Regional Offices promoting research networking, knowledge sharing and advanced learning.

The main objectives are as follows:

  • monitoring and inventorying size and quality of forest ecosystem services for a better understanding of the interactions between forests and water in mountain environments of Europe and overseas;
  • identifying tools and criteria to forecast the effects of global change on mountain forests and the water cycle, integrating research infrastructures in forested catchments and agroforestry systems, transferring experimental results into technical recommendations;
  • assessing the potential impacts of forest management and land use and land-use changes on mountain hydrology and the availability/quality of water resources, implementing long-term experimental and demonstration sites, and developing site-specific adaptation strategies;
  • incorporating applied research and governance analysis to disseminate the benefits of forest ecosystem services to stakeholders, finding equilibrium between economic development (e.g. innovative wood technology and renewable energy sector) and environmental conservation (e.g. reduction of soil erosion and control of invasive species).
