SURF - Supporting the Global Implementation of REDD+ and FLEGT

Coordinated by Institute for World Forestry, Centre for Wood Sciences, University of Hamburg, Leuschnerstrasse 91, 21031 Hamburg, Germany

and Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Leuven, Celestijnenlaan 200 E – 2411, 3001 Leuven, Belgium

The Project Centre was established in 2014.

The EFI Project Centre SURF is a thematic Project Centre that aims at performing interdisciplinary research, research synthesis, foresight and knowledge transfer on ecosystem services of forests worldwide. In connection to the activities and experiences of the EFI’s FLEGT and REDD Facilities, SURF will activate and strengthen European and international research in the subjects of REDD+ and FLEGT and will develop synergies among these subjects. In addition, SURF will provide an information platform for EFI’s Associate Members to collaborate on scientific and methodological topics related to REDD+ and FLEGT with a strong emphasis on global issues of European relevance.

The expected outcome of EFI Project Centre SURF after five years of activity (2014-2018) will be a better conceptual and methodological integration of REDD+ and FLEGT in the broader context of sustainable development. SURF will have contributed with innovative research projects and joint publications on selected topics at the interface between REDD+ and FLEGT to the development of international forest governance processes, and it will have strengthened with information and communication the European research community dealing with global forest issues.
