Liina Jürisoo (2016)

Liina Jurisoo Liina Jürisoo, from the Estonian University of Life Sciences, worked on the spread of Dutch elm disease in the eastern neighbourhood of Estonia. She visited the Department of Forest Protection, Wood Science and Game Management of Saint Petersburg State Forest Technical University, Russia.

The objectives of the SSV were three-fold: (i) investigate the spread of Dutch elm disease (DED; caused by Ophiostoma novo-ulmi) in the parks of Saint Petersburg and the regions nearby; (ii) collect samples of O. novo-ulmi, elm species and bark beetles for isolation and DNA analyses of DED; (iii) develop closer cooperation with colleagues from the Department of Forest Protection, Wood Science and Game Management. The field work for the SSV took place in three visits between 10 June and 23 July, 2016.

The researchers are planning at least two papers based on the collected samples: (i) spread of DED in Russia and Estonia and what pathogens were found on the elms; and (ii) DED resistant elms in the climate zone.
