Sustainable forest management – research capacities and priorities

An official side event of the 72nd session of the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry.

Aims

The objective of this high-level workshop is to discuss and share views on the potential to increase cooperation and set joint priorities for research needs in the field of sustainable forest management in the EU, Russia and Eastern partnership countries. 

The workshop will

  • present the results of mapping existing research capacities, infrastructures and programmes in Russia and Eastern partnership countries in sustainable forest management
  • discuss future research needs benefiting from cooperation between the EU and Russia-Eastern partnership countries
  • identify tentatively joint priorities for joint research.

The workshop results will be used as a basis for further work on identifying joint research priorities, as background work for a possible later joint Call for proposals targeted at EU and Russia/Eastern partnership countries on research on sustainable forest management.

Detailed programme

Participants

Participation will be by invitation only. Expected participants are high-level representatives of the forest sector in Russia and Eastern Partnership countries, representatives of applied research, academic and educational organisations, sectoral ministries and representatives of research funding organisations, as well as SUMFOREST partners - owners of forest research programmes in EU countries.

Simultaneous interpretation between English and Russian will be provided.
