Topic 2011 - Forest and Energy

The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week 2011 discusses science and policy used in decision making concerning the role of forests in energy questions. The fast growing population together with industrial development and still increasing poverty in developing countries has created a huge need to increase the energy production. When this fact is combined to increased carbon emissions (energy accounts for 80% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the EU), declining amount of fossil fuels and general concern about the environmental and human welfare, we are facing the important problem: how to produce enough and pure energy preferably using renewable resources. Forests and forest energy, together with solar, water and wind power, are the most referred sources seen as a possibility to solve the problem and “save the world”.

Background

The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week (JFNW) is an initiative connecting and increasing the interaction between young and experienced scientists, professionals and stakeholders in forestry from different parts of Europe. JFNW was organised in 2009 for the first time by Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla), European Forest Institute (EFI) and University of Eastern Finland. The issues around climate change were discussed from the viewpoint of forest policy and forest management at local, regional and European levels. After receiving very positive feedback from the participants of the JFNW 2009 the responsible organisations agreed to organize these events also in the future. Timely and important topics were chosen for the next two events, for 2010 “Forests and Water” and for 2011 “Forests and Energy”. For the 2010 event, a new organizing institute joined the team: North Karelia University of Applied Sciences. 47 participants from 11 countries gathered in the Joensuu Forestry Networking Week 2010 to discuss the issues regarding forests and water in Europe. This year JFNW2011 gathered together 62 participants to study forests and energy. During the week 15 experts gave presentations and the program also included group work and field trip with practical activities. Since then, a decision has also been taken for the event in 2012. The topic of the week will be “Green Growth Based on Forests: New Wooden Products and Construction”.
