EFI 20 Years Science and Policy Forum
23-27 September 2013 in Nancy, France
Our forests in the 21st century – ready for risks and opportunities?
EFI celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2013. During these two decades, the institute has evolved in many respects and has led to major achievements. The commemoration is also an opportunity to develop an analysis of the future of our forests, and on how EFI and its partners can contribute to meet the challenges related to the various changes, risks and uncertainties to which the forests will be exposed.
The forum will give a taste on a few important and concrete issues, seen as illustrations or examples, which will stimulate balanced discussion between policy/decision makers, stakeholders and scientists. This will be achieved through 3 sessions:
- The first session, mainly relates to policy aspects. The goal is “to set the scene” by providing broad views from the angle of science, international policy, and from various high-level forums and EU bodies on the strategies and policies to be implemented for counteracting risks and creating opportunities.
- The second session will presents the views of some practitioners/stakeholders in forestry. It is intended to illustrate a few “on the ground” cases.
- The third session “ what science can tell us” will illustrate through some examples (on fire, windstorm and economics) how and to what conditions, scientific expertise, which has been acquired trough research, can contribute to support and found better policies and strategies, related to risk and uncertainty management.
A general discussion involving an expert panel and the whole audience will generate ideas for new instruments facilitating efficient knowledge uptake by decision makers. This is seen as a transition to the session to be held on the next day in relation to the development of a European facility on “forest related risks”.
