The project aimed to a) identify the factors affecting wood demand in North-West Russia and especially in the Novgorod region, b) gather and compile the most recent data on the present state of the forests of the Novgrod region and simulate the development of region's forests. The development in the Novgrod region was simulated for the next 50 years under the following three scenarios:
The used methodologies and results were presented in an international seminar at St. Petersburg State Forest Technical Academy in December 2002. The scientific results of the study are published in EFI Proceedings 48.
- future management with current harvesting levels;
- future management with maximum sustainable harvesting levels;
- future nature conservation management, in which certain parts of the forest are excluded from harvesting.
